ABOUT THE PROJECT

Fragment is a 6-week project I was given the opportunity to execute while having my internship with ADI-design. I took what I learned in my 3 months internship and challenged myself to design an object different from my usual design methodologies from human-centric to material-centric. I wanted to treat FDM 3d print PLA as an ‘organic material’ akin to that of wood or marble instead of a means of prototyping.

I started with analyzing the company’s pile of “failed” prints to list down the common characteristics of the material which tend to be corrected in post-production. I narrowed down the common characteristics I wanted to highlight to be small build plate volume, visible infill, and ridges on the surface. Fragment takes reference from the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi to inform its design process while drawing inspiration from furniture brands such as Conde House and Ariake for its styling.
